In January 2015, Rutgers University began work on a project awarded from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) through the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) to enhance the recruitment and retention of a diverse Intelligence Community workforce with capabilities critical to the national security interests of the United States. As a result of this award, Rutgers became an Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence (IC CAE), with the goal of developing sustainable national security and intelligence programs to educate and inform a diverse pool of students on the Rutgers University campuses.
