The Environmental Investigation Agency investigates and campaigns against environmental crime and abuse. We are based in London, UK and also have offices in Washington USA, The Hague Netherlands and partners globally.
Our undercover investigations expose transnational wildlife crime, with a focus on elephants, pangolins and tigers and forest crimes such as illegal logging and deforestation for cash crops such as palm oil. We work to safeguard global marine ecosystems by addressing the threats posed by plastic pollution, bycatch and commercial exploitation of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Finally, we reduce the impact of climate change by campaigning to eliminate powerful refrigerant greenhouse gases, exposing related illicit trade and improving energy efficiency in the cooling sector. We use our findings in hard-hitting reports to campaign for improved governance and more effective enforcement.
Our field experience is used to provide guidance to enforcement agencies and we form partnerships with local groups and activists and support their work through hands-on training.
The Volunteer Team is made up of Volunteers, Work Experience and Interns who work either from our office in London or remotely and are located in many parts of the world. The purpose of the Volunteer Team is to support all Campaign Teams with a variety of work requiring a diverse skill set and experience.

Job title: Volunteer Intelligence and data researcher
Team: Volunteer Team alongside Intelligence team
Job description: Successful applicants will work alongside the intelligence team to support a current project on environmental crime trends. In June 2021 EIA released a public version of their seizure database called the Global Environmental Crime Tracker (GECT). The objective of GECT was to make environmental crimes and prosecutions more accessible to the public and provide detailed analytics of what the data is showing about trends and methodology of criminal networks involved in wildlife trafficking and other environmental crimes.
As part of the internship, students will support the development of GECT, including the maintenance of the incident and prosecution data that feeds into the tool.
Tasks will include:
- Searching for new incidents or conviction outcomes to input to the database using open-source research skills
- Assisting with cleansing of the data to allow for greater analysis on convergence of wildlife crimes and corruption links
- Assisting the team to identify ways to develop the tool
- Ad hoc research or intelligence analysis tasks as directed by the intelligence team manager
Skills required:
Essential:
- Fluent in English

- Excellent level of data entry skills using computer database software
- Open-source research experience
- Creativity
Desirable:
- Microsoft PowerApps or PowerBI experience
- Interest or experience in environmental crime or wildlife trafficking issues
- ArcGIS or other GIS mapping software experience
